Freesia
The history of freesia 'Klatt', a
member of the iridacea family, goes
back some 200 years to South-Africa
where all species were discovered.
This beautiful flower received its
name from Ecklon who named it after
his friend Dr. F.H. Th. Freese. The
genus freesia was properly described
by Klatt in 1866.
Commercial
crop
Freesias were first grown
commercially in 1873. However it was
not until after 1945 that freesias
became an important flower crop.
About 400 hectares of freesias are
grown in Europe nowadays. Freesia
flowers are becoming increasingly
popular in Europe and the United
States.
Also more and more freesias are
grown now in South-America, Asia and
Oceania.
