Carnation
Flower Meaning
Fascination, womanly love, devoted love

Dianthus caryophyllus is known to North Americans as the carnation. The carnation diversity makes them suitable for many uses in floral designs, ranging from traditional arrangements to body flowers.

Carnations are one of some 300 species of annual, biennial and perennial herbs in the genus Dianthus, which means "flower of Zeus" in Greek. Common relatives of the carnation, a member of the Caryophyllaceae family, include sweet William, gypsophila and chickweed.

Carnations are available year round in many different colours and sizes.  Some are highly scented and are used to make perfumes. With proper care, carnations can last two weeks.

Did you know that...
January's Birth flower is the carnation.

The Carnation's original color was pink, eventually becoming available in more colors. In Canada and the United States, Carnations are often worn on the second Sunday in May in celebration of Mother's Day. A red Carnation is generally worn if your mother is alive, and a white Carnation is worn if she has passed away.

Carnations is a popular choice for Weddings.

Each color of a Carnation has a different meaning. Light red symbolizes admiration, while dark red symbolizes a deep love. White symbolizes both pure love and luck. Striped Carnations symbolize regret. Purple Carnations are said to indicate capriciousness. Green Carnations are used predominantly on St. Patrick's Day. Pink Carnations are said to be a symbol of a mother's undying love, going back to biblical times when Carnations sprang up out of the ground where the Virgin Mary's tears fell as Jesus was carrying the cross.

At Oxford University, it is customary to wear a Carnation to an exam. White Carnations are worn to the first exam, red to the last, and pink Carnations to every exam in between.

Care and Handling
Remove any foliage that will fall below the water line of the carnations' container before recutting the stems under water. Place the carnations to a clean container holding a properly prepared fresh flower-food solution. Recut the stems underwater and remove foliage that may be submerged before inserting the stems in a vase or design.
